Alethia
Alethia is a mobile application started to help consumers identify ethical brands and make it easy to make better shopping decisions. The application mixes corporate, legal, and UPC data to create a simple and easily understandable user flows.
The company grew out of a solo project, which was a database that I kept for myself to not accidently buy Nestle products. Soon after, the project was accepted into the Iowa Startup Factory who saw the potential good this type of product would have in the world. After, Alethia underwent market validation, user testing, and finally incorporated in June, 2024 with plans to launch the mobile application on Android and IOS in 2025.
Alethia's mission is to educate people about corporate behavior that harms the environment, workers, and erodes consumer trust.
Alethia aggregates data dispersed across 46 federal agencies and nearly 500 state agencies, made available through the Freedom of Information Act and similar transparency laws. The true challenge lies not merely in accessing this data, but in transforming it into a coherent, accessible resource that cuts through complexity, enabling consumers to make informed and ethical decisions with confidence.
Problem:
-
Holding companies, subsidiaries, complex chains of ownership, and other types of partnerships obscure corporate responsibility and consumer transparency.
-
Government reporting data is generally inaccessible by means of complexity, format, or process which minimize it's effectiveness in promoting better buying habits.
-
People who seek product information are often obtaining it from inaccurate sources.
Solution:
-
Create a mobile application that easily allows users to identify a products parent company, understand their legal history, and make better decisions effortlessly.
